Redundancy notes for Employers.
Unfortunately in the present economic climate many employers are finding that sustaining work is difficult and, because of that, reductions in staffing become necessary. Redundancy, therefore, becomes a very real possibility.
If you are a company needing to reduce your staffing levels, are you sure that the process you are following is correct and complies with Employment Law? Firstly you should see if there are any other solutions to your problem, if that proves to be impossible and Redundancy is necessary, there is a process to be followed. There must be a notice of redundancy, a consultation period, proper notice and redundancy payments where applicable. The notice period and consultation period depends on the number of staff being made redundant. Similarly, notice periods and redundancy payments depend on length of service and age. Make sure you consult an HR Consultant or Employment Law specialist before taking any action or agreeing to terms.
It is crucial that, in an already stressful situation, everybody gets a fair and proper deal. There are rules and they must be followed, if you don’t understand them get help from someone who does!
